I wish that in my time of need, there had been more women like Clara and Fran, who understood both the “bread” and the “roses” of women's health care. But I wanted to let other women facing the same difficult decision know that they weren’t alone. I knew that in sharing my story, I would be judged for the decision I made. So to answer the question of why I chose to share my story, I did it for them - the women in my life, who, before I was even born, fought for women and their right to be cared for and heard. To this day, Bread and Roses continues to open its doors to women seeking safe and effective reproductive health care. They were an honorable example of women helping women in their time of need. My mother and her niece Evelyn also became involved in everything from counseling women to sterilizing equipment. Beyond being physically cared for, these women needed emotional support - they needed to be heard and understood at a time when they felt alone. She took the time to get to know the women, to listen to their stories as they opened up their hearts, and to understand their emotional needs during such a critical time - the “roses” of the clinic’s mission statement. It was the first point in the book where it felt like she was relatable and I really felt like she had been through something tragic.Clara spent more than five years counseling women through their decision to terminate their pregnancies. The only redeeming piece of the book was when she was describing her abortion and the difficulty of it. Many of us have been there too, and you don't see us writing books about it. With some advice from your parents, you got out of debt. She's not even particularly brilliant in her revelations. She's not more special for them, just because she was a child actress. These are the same mistakes that teenagers and young adults have been making for a veryyyy long time. But the way she describes them and the way she overcame them is like she's the first one to ever make them and like she's giving us these amazing revelations/answers. What could Naya Rivera have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I'm all for confidence, but there should be more self-awareness. I wish I hadn't spent a credit on this, or that I'd contributed to her big headed idea that she's somehow still relevant. Read Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up by Rivera, Naya, lexile & reading level:, (ISBN: 9780399184994). Not so much, she's just a normal girl thinking she's really got talent. I was hoping this would be a deeper exploration into her upbringing and that she had somehow overcome HUGE odds and it might make me think that she's more than just a bland actress.
She brags so hard that it was painful to listen to, especially during her child-actor years.
